About Skyridge Junior Devo

A youth mountain bike development program built on community, competition, and the joy of riding bikes.

About the Team

Skyridge Junior Devo (Devo) is the development mountain bike team for Skyridge High School in Lehi, Utah. We're a non-profit program open to all current 7th and 8th grade students — no experience required.

We compete as part of the Utah NICA (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) league, which emphasizes inclusivity, sportsmanship, and personal growth as much as it does racing.

NICA's vision: "where every American youth has the opportunity to build a strong body, mind, and character through interscholastic cycling."

Our motto: Strong, Brave, Kind.

The program is entirely volunteer-led by certified NICA coaches and supported by generous local sponsors and families. Interested in becoming a ride leader?

Practice Schedule

Practices
Tuesdays & Thursdays | 6:00 – 8:00 AM

Practices are held outdoors on local trails. Location is posted each week through Spond, our team communication app. Download Spond and join the team group — your coach will share the join link after registration.

What Parents Can Expect

Communication

All team communication happens through Spond. Download the app and enable notifications. Coaches also send email updates for important deadlines.

Volunteer Hours

Devo is entirely volunteer-run. Families are expected to contribute at races (marshaling, tent setup, timing). Specific roles are assigned through Spond each race.

Race Day

Arrive 2 hours before your rider's start time. Devo start time is 2:30 PM for all races. Plan to stay through the awards ceremony.

Ride Starts on Time

Riders must be ready and signed in before the start. Coaches enforce a 6:1 rider-to-leader ratio for safety — please respect this policy.

Team Culture & Expectations

Strong

We push our limits on the bike and in life. We show up, work hard, and don't quit when it gets hard.

Brave

We ride trails that scare us. We try new skills. We race even when we're nervous. Courage is a muscle.

Kind

We cheer for teammates and competitors alike. We help riders who are struggling. We treat trails, landowners, and volunteers with respect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my rider need to be a strong cyclist to join?
No. Devo is a development program. If your rider can ride 5 miles on flat ground, we'll build from there. Many riders have never competed before.
What bike do we need?
A trail or mountain bike with working gears and brakes. 27.5" or 29" hardtails are ideal for most 7th/8th graders — full suspension is not required. We're happy to help with bike selection. Avoid road bikes, cruisers, or bikes with thick knobby tires designed for dirt jumps.
What if my rider gets injured?
Safety is our top priority. All rides are led by NICA-certified ride leaders. Coaches carry basic first aid supplies on every ride. Riders are covered by NICA's accident insurance during official team activities.
Do we need to attend every practice?
Consistent attendance is strongly encouraged — it's how riders improve and bond with teammates. That said, life happens. Just communicate through Spond if your rider will be absent.
Can my rider participate if they have a school conflict?
Talk to the head coach. We work with student-athletes involved in other sports and activities where possible.
Is there a wait list?
We cap the team based on the number of certified ride leaders available. Register early. If we reach capacity, we'll maintain a wait list.
